MIRAL

With Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass, Willem Dafoe, Vanessa Redgrave, Alexander Siddig

Written by Rula Jebreal (based on the novel by Rula Jebreal)
Directed by Julian Schnabel

Taking on this very controversial subject in an extremely volatile part of the world, artist and director Julian Schnabel took the daring plunge and brought this true Palestinian story to the screen.

After the creation of Israel and splitting of Palestine (in 1948), Hind Husseini created an orphanage to care for the abandoned and misplaced Palestinian children, giving them a good education and protecting them from the increased hostility on the outside. One of these children is Miral, whose father took her there for a shot at a better chance. As she grows older her eyes open to the situation of her country and people, fired up to join their cause in resisting the Israeli presence (which one side will see as oppression of an entire nation, and another as justified control of a terrorist state).

A passionate and heartfelt look at the Israeli issue which remains a contentious one, and the fact that this story is told by a director with a Jewish heritage makes it even more potent.
Stars Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto.
